It’s reassuring to know that there are numerous solar rebates and incentives are available in 2025. It all adds up to great news for homeowners and businesses looking to invest in solar energy… particularly as Queensland moves towards a greener future. Understanding these offerings can help you save significantly on your solar panel and battery installation (and home battery storage systems) and make the transition to renewable energy more affordable.
Introduction to Solar Rebates
A solar rebate is a financial incentive designed to reduce the upfront costs associated with installing solar systems. With the increased push for sustainability, the Australian government has implemented various rebate programs that can save you thousands on your solar energy system.
Federal Solar Rebates
One of the key federal incentives is the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). As a homeowner, this program allows you to earn Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) based on the size of your solar system. For systems under 100kW, the rebate typically ranges from $400 to $600 per kW. For example, a 6.6kW solar panel system can attract an average rebate of approximately $2,554.
Queensland Solar Panel Rebates
In Queensland, the solar rebate works to significantly reduce installation costs, with average savings of around $2,000 for a 6.6kW system. The most common size of a PV solar system is 6.6kW (but I suggest that if you can go bigger, do that. No only will you make greater savings, you’ll have more free power from the sun. To date, I’ve never heard anyone complain that they invested in a system that was too big! Quite the contrary. Anyway, please note that the SRES rebate amount decreases each year, with the program scheduled to end on December 31, 2030.
Solar Battery Rebates
Eligible homeowners can also benefit from solar battery rebates, receiving up to $4,000 based on their income level. To qualify, you must have a household income below $180,000 and install a solar system with a minimum capacity of 5kW. Waiver: There is no current solar battery system rebate in Qld. But with elections looming, we could see changes both Federally and on the State Govt level.
Feed-in Tariffs
Queensland’s feed-in tariffs allow you to sell excess solar energy back to the grid, generating additional income. Current rates range from 3 to 10 cents per kWh, varying by electricity retailer. This can help accelerate the payback period for your investment. Newsflash: Don’t base your decision on investing in rooftop solar on your feed-in tariff. These change and they are fast decreasing. While at the time of writing this article, the common FIT is 3 cents, you may have heard that the tariff in Victoria is a tiny fraction of a cent. It’s not fair but it’s happening… and likely to be mimicked in the other states.
Investment for Energy Independence
When you buy a car, you don’t see how it’s going to pay you back. But for some reason, people often work out what the ROI will be to install solar panels. This may be concerning for customers new to the solar, but if you have experienced life with free or cut-price energy because of solar installations, then you’ll know how great it feels to have energy independence (even just to a partial degree) and feel more immune to the price fluctuations of the big energy companies.
Additional Incentives
There are some excellent additional incentives for which you will have to qualify. For example, being older can pay you a dividend (LOL). You could receive discounts for new solar systems if you’re a concession card holder, So too, there are rebates for appliance electrification, and incentives for installing electric vehicle charging stations. I know of certain power companies that give you FREE POWER for between 3 and 5 hours per day (every day of the year) if you own an EV. And you’ll find companies that will charge a far smaller tariff overnight (off-peak tariff) again, if you own an EV. Oh, and while it’s not exactly an incentive, there are many companies that give you 0% finance solutions. You really can take advantage of many beneficial arrangements!
How to Claim Your Solar Rebates
To claim your solar rebates, you must use a Clean Energy Council approved solar installer. Fortunately, they will manage the rebate application process, and ensure you meet all eligibility requirements. Win-Win!
